Regio TV broadcast 17 July 2020. In this week’s programme: The ANC deploys the Minister of Public Works, Patricia de Lille, as its Champion in the Overberg. This is part of the government’s new district model local government strategy. We report on the surge in Covid numbers in the Overstrand and specifically Hermanus. A local GP says masks not only prevents the spread of Covid but is also curbing the spread of other infections. SAPS Overberg Clustyer Commander, Brig. Donovan Heilbron warn that people not wearing masks or not heeding the new curfew will be acted against. Businesses in the Overstrand are struggling amidst the pandemic and hundreds of jobs could be lost, they warn. Pieta Pieterse reports from inside the Gerimed Frail Care Centre in Kleinmond where residents have been in lockdown for almost four months. The number of Covid cases in the Overberg are still increasing sharply. In other news conservation bodies in Hermanus are gearing up for a new fight over the proposed bypass for the town and some enterprising small companies are trying to step into the void the municipality left when recycling was abandoned. Municipalities across the country seem to be collapsing and the DA is suggesting that the government wants to replace them with command type councils at a local level.
